The Internette: October’s online dramas and the deeper issues behind them

The foundation of so much internet culture can be traced back to fandom, and that's no clearer than in this month's online drama.

Welcome to The Internette with Soaliha, Ette Media’s online culture column. On the first Tuesday of every month, Soaliha cuts through comment section slop to get you across online discourse that actually matters. From a cover shoot with Jennifer Lawrence to a right-wing Harry Potter meme, let’s dive into what people were getting riled up about online in October — and why these issues run deeper than they seem.

It’s becoming clearer to me with every new internet drama that the foundations of so much online culture comes back to fandom. Celebrity fandom, Harry Potter fandom, smutty fan fiction, fans cancelling journalists for writing profiles they don’t like… Fans carry the internet and shape enormous amounts of online discourse. I love them, I am one, but sometimes we need to interrogate the structures at play here…

Which brings me to this week's Internette column. Let’s get into it.

The drama: Jennifer Lawrence looks very different in her new The Cut photoshoot

The deeper issue: women’s appearances are never apolitical, and neither are beauty standards. When Botox is literally reducing women’s facial expressiveness, a photoshoot’s creative decision to highlight still faces is going to raise eyebrows (lol)
