Stories that didn’t get enough coverage this week

ABC stalls on scrapping its Indigenous TV department, a study on how influencers shape young people's politics and Iran reportedly outlawing interviews with foreign media from "hostile countries" are just some of the stories we think you should be across.

Only Fran's glow up: ready for you to watch in full.

By Soaliha Iqbal

Good morning Etterati,

Soaliha here (I’m back!) with your weekly rundown of the stories that have saturated the media this week, and the ones that… haven’t.

Before I do that, a quick note to let you know that Only Fran has had a glow up and will be available to watch in full on Apple podcasts or YouTube!

Today's episode: The Asio Laws That Just Passed The Senate.

This week a bill passed the Senate that will give ASIO extended powers on top of its already very extended powers. Not only can an innocent person be hauled in for questioning, held for 24-hours, potentially without a lawyer but they can’t tell anyone about it.

Now, ASIO will be given added powers on what it can question you on and Jan Fran has a feeling it’s got to do with Palestine protests.

Back to the stories that we think you should be across, but didn't get the ettention it deserved.

This week, our feeds have been dominated by the sexual assault allegations against the Sydney Swans (plus the discourse around how it was handled in the press), misogynistic attitudes amongst teen boys in Australia, the NDIS cuts that will see thousands of people booted off the scheme, and Labor’s new gambling reforms that have fallen short of actually doing much

Between these huge stories, others have fallen between the cracks and/or only received minimal coverage. Here’s what you might have missed this week.

ABC delays axing Indigenous TV department, after Lamestream report, Lamestream

Earlier this week, Lamestream revealed the ABC was axing the Indigenous TV department. Fast forward four days and it’s now reporting that the dismantling of the ABC Indigenous Department has been delayed until September 3 after staff outcry.

Is this delay due to Lamestream’s reporting? Well, no one else reported it so…

Lamestream’s initial report revealed that the Head of Indigenous Kelrick Martin was made redundant and all Indigenous teams outside the News division were to be folded under a new division. This means ABC will no longer have a specialist department that oversees commissioning and developing TV shows that tell Indigenous stories
